Is There Another App To Fly My G Maxtec 865c
I received the G-Maxtec 865C Quadcopter as a Christmas gift. I wanted the Syma X5C-1 but Santa brought the 865C instead. Nevertheless, I was happy to receive it. The camera and FPV capability peaked my interest. Internet searches turn up little information for the G-Maxtec 865C. This quad is somewhat of a mystery. There just isn't much information about it on the internet. Some of the photos I have seen online show a different part number. Nevertheless, let's take a look at it.

First Impressions
The 865C looks suspiciously similar to the Syma X5C in many ways. The body is very similar. The propellers are identical. Many of the other parts look identical. The battery looks very similar and has the same connector. The construction seems pretty good. Not overly rugged and bulky nor too flimsy and frail. The propeller guards are a nice touch for newer flyers. I really like the metallic red color and the silver accents. This color scheme is not seen on many other quadcopters.
I won't go over the remote in much detail this review. It has all the typical settings and buttons found on quads at this price point. It felt good in my hands and the FPV mount is adjustable. I did not encounter any issues with it what so ever. Please see the photo below for more detail.
Performance
The 865C is a pretty good flyer. Control and maneuverability is very good. It has a both a low and high mode setting. Low mode is good for indoors and small back yards and less experienced flyers. In high mode the 865C is pretty impressive. You can pull off some very aggressive maneuvers including flips and rolls while in high mode. When changing directions the angle of attack is quite high and menacing looking. It does not have a headless mode. It is pretty light so flying in medium to high winds is out of the question. The manual says the range is 100m to 150m indoors. In my backyard I was able to get out to 60 or 70 yards and return easily. I will have to do more testing this spring. This quad does come with a runaway feature. If the quad goes out of transmitter range, simply shut the remote off and the quad motors shut off and the quad descends. Depending on the altitude, there shouldn't be too much damage if the quad did a free fall into the ground. I had an issue in the wind and had to shut the throttle down resulting in the quad dropping from about 25 yards up. The quad suffered no damage at all. With the stock 3.7V 650mAh battery I was able to get about 7 minutes of flight time in while flying in light winds and taking it easy. Flight times were about 5 minutes with aggressive flying or running the camera.
FPV and Camera
The 865C comes with a cell phone mounting bracket for the transmitter. I was able to easily download the FPV app from the Google play store to my Android smart phone. There is also an app in Apple's app store for iOS users. In my case, I was using a Samsung Galaxy S6. Connecting the camera to the cell phone is easy. First, you turn on the quad. Second, you open up your phone's wifi settings. In a few seconds you should see the camera's SSID show up as "MJX C4005 FPV_XXXX". Select this wifi to connect to the quadcopter's camera. Lastly, open up the G-Maxtech FPV app on your phone and tap the screen. From there you can tap either the video or photo icons to record video or snap still photos. Media is stored on your phone's internal memory.
I couldn't find any documentation on the HD camera on the box, in the manual or online. The video feed was sometimes laggy and sometimes not. This could have been from interference from the large number of wifi signals in my neighborhood. I didn't run into any issues with the FPV interfering with the transmitter sending signals to the quad. The video quality is basically middle of the road as is the quality of still shots. Not bad but nothing you will win an Oscar with. This is to be expected with a $60 quadcopter. I experienced jello once in a while. Again, what can one expect for $60 for quad and camera with FPV. Unless you have a super light camera upgrading is probably not an option. The day I tested it was cloudy and gloomy. Perhaps, in the sunshine the camera performance would be better. I will have to test it again on a sunny day.
Pros
Quick, stable and nimble flyer
Nice color and graphics
Syma X5C replacement parts seem to fit nicely.
FPV works pretty well
High and Low Speed Modes
Propeller guards
Durable
Cons
Lesser known brand
No headless mode.
Below average to average camera
Not for flying in medium/heavy winds
Summary
Overall, the G-Maxtec 865C is a very good flyer. It is quick and nimble. It's well suited for newer flyers and budget minded flyers alike. Flight times with the included battery are average. While the lack of headless mode is disappointing, the 865C makes up for it with the FPV setup and durability. It would make a nice addition to anyone's fleet.
